The Next Chapter

Owl & Monkey is about to embark on a new adventure!

When, in January this year, much loved local shop, Snowhome, announced plans to close its doors after 19 years of trading, it was a message received with great sadness.

Set-up by Angus McArthur with a mission to offer a retail experience like no other in York, it has become a popular feature on Gillygate with a loyal customer base who visit to discover its carefully considered collection of design-led goods.

Angus’ decision to close the store saw him speak of the challenges facing retail but also of a passionate belief of its integral part in our communities and the possibilities for a new generation of shopkeepers to shape and curate new spaces; a dream we also share.

Angus’ decision came at time when we knew, for our little business to grow, we needed to find it a new bricks and mortar home. A space where more passing trade and clusters of other businesses could support our development. So, it seemed like a it was a time when our two little businesses needed changes that could support each other.

We are thrilled to say that, after many cups of coffee and exciting planning, we are in the process of buying Snowhome from Angus. An exciting opportunity to bring the best of Snowhome and Owl & Monkey together into one space.

We have all been working hard so that, despite these more uncertain times (we write as the Covid-19 outbreak has altered daily life for us all) we can take over ownership of Snowhome by the summer. As of 1st August we are, therefore, so excited to say we are now the proud owners of Snowhome and we will be making our move to 42 Gillygate over the next couple of weeks to create an exciting new space; O+M Snowhome, a shared and joyful space we hope we will all need in our futures.

The shop will bring together our shared values; conscious consumerism will remain at the core of the new shop with a carefully chosen range of responsibly sourced, design-led goods to celebrate the everyday. Creative collaborations and partnerships with both individual makers and considerate manufacturers will also remain integral to the space.

We hope it will remain a place that both ours and Snowhome’s communities feel part of, a place where old favourites and new discoveries can still be found. Angus and we are hugely grateful to all the support of our amazing customers, suppliers and makers and we really want them all to feel a part of this new opportunity.

We will, of course, be sad to leave our little shop on the Heslington Road but we are excited about the new possibilities of bringing Snowhome and Owl & Monkey together. This is about us growing and moving onto the next chapter in our story.

Updates and news of the developments will be available on our and Snowhome’s Instagram accounts @owl_and_monkey and @snowhomeuk and websites and We will be releasing some early bird, private shopping events via our mailing list too.
